Airway Stenosis
Precision Surgery with the BeamPath™ ENT
Surgery in the airway requires a tool with the highest degree of control and maneuverability. OmniGuide®’s BeamPath ENT product line offers a technological breakthrough that enables precise treatment of airway stenosis.
What is an Airway Stenosis?
Airway stenosis refers to an abnormal narrowing of the trachea or larynx. The most common cause of airway stenosis is trauma from prolonged intubation, surgery, or neck trauma. It can also result from chronic inflammatory diseases (e.g. amyloidosis) and collagen vascular diseases (e.g. Wegener Granulomatosis).
Surgical Treatment of Airway Stenosis
Surgical intervention is required when the airway has narrowed so much it interferes with breathing. Airway stenosis is often treated with dilation (expansion) following radial cuts. The surgery is performed in the operating room under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes two to four radial incisions into the stenosis and then dilates the airway using increasingly larger rigid bronchoscopes or a specialized dilating tool. More and more surgeons are choosing OmniGuide’s BeamPath™ ENT fiber to make cuts into the stenosis. This is because the BeamPath ENT fiber delivers a precise energy source that is easily maneuverable.
Why OmniGuide BeamPath?
Surgeons use the BeamPath ENT system because it delivers a precise energy source (CO2 laser energy) that minimizes bleeding and ensures preservation of healthy tissue. The flexibility of the BeamPath fiber allows surgeons to deliver CO2 laser energy directly to the site of the stenosis. The fiber’s ease of use and the superficial nature of CO2 laser energy allow some airway stenosis procedures to be performed in an office-based setting rather than in the operating room. If a surgeon decides it is best to treat a patient’s stenosis in an office-based setting, he/she applies topical anesthesia and treats the narrowing in the airway while the patient is awake. This avoids hospital admission and the need for general anesthesia.
