Precision Laser Ear Surgery with the BeamPath™ OTO
Video
Surgery of the ear requires a tool with the highest degree of precision and safety. OmniGuide®’s BeamPath OTO product line offers a technological breakthrough that enables delivery of the highly precise CO2 laser energy through a flexible fiber. This technological breakthrough allows for the CO2 laser to be used in the treatment of middle ear conditions to repair conductive hearing loss and clear chronic middle ear disease. Surgeons currently use the BeamPath OTO for the following procedures: stapedectomy, revision stapedectomy, chronic ear conditions with diseased tissue, cochlear implants, and tumor removal.
What is Otosclerosis?
Otosclerosis is a condition of bony growth in the middle ear which can lead to hearing loss. The middle ear consists of the three smallest bones in the human body, the incus, malleus and stapes. This bony chain (also called the ossicular chain) acts as a tuning fork that transmits sound in the form of mechanical vibration from the external ear to the nerves in the inner ear. This process is called conductive hearing. One reason for hearing loss is otosclerosis or bony growth around the ossicular chain causing fixation of some or all of the bones in the chain. Once the stapes bone or another part of the ossicular chain is fixed, its ability to vibrate is limited and conductive hearing is impaired. In cases where hearing loss starts to interfere with daily activities, doctors often recommend surgery to restore the function of the ossicular chain. Surgical procedures to treat hearing loss due to otosclerosis are termed: stapedectomy, stapedotomy, or ossicular chain reconstruction.
Surgical Treatment for Otosclerosis: CLASS
More and more surgeons are choosing OmniGuide’s BeamPath OTO CO2 laser fiber to treat conductive hearing loss due to otosclerosis using a technique termed CLASS: CO2 Laser Assisted Stapes Surgery (Stapedectomy/ Stapedotomy). The BeamPath OTO system delivers CO2 laser energy in a flexible fiber allowing the surgeon to perform stapes surgery in a safe and precise manner and restore your conductive hearing.
What other conditions may affect my hearing?
Conditions of the middle ear caused by chronic ear infection or other middle and inner ear diseases may affect your hearing. Treatment for these conditions is determined by your doctor and may or may not necessitate surgery. In the case where surgery is recommended, your surgeon can choose to use OmniGuide’s BeamPath OTO CO2 laser fiber as a precision tool for ear surgery.
Surgical Treatment for Chronic Middle Ear Disease: CLEAR (CO2 Laser Enabled Ablation & Resection)
One of the options now available for surgical treatment of chronic middle ear disease is CLEAR: CO2 Laser Enabled Ablation & Resection. CLEAR technique with the Beampath OTO allows surgeons to remove diseased tissue in a delicate, layer-by-layer manner, while preserving healthy underlying ear structures.
Why OmniGuide BeamPath OTO?
Surgeons use the BeamPath OTO system because it delivers precise CO2 laser energy through a flexible fiber. The BeamPath OTO fiber allows the surgeon to operate with controlled precision and safely perform the surgical procedure while preserving the healthy structures of the middle and inner ear. The flexibility of the hand-held BeamPath OTO fiber allows surgeons to manipulate CO2 laser energy and treat a variety middle and inner ear conditions.
